Counting the Cost is based on Luke 14: 28-33
Suppose one of you wants to build a gated community? Won’t you first sit down with your plans and your calculator and figure out an estimate for the cost? Won’t you see if you have enough money to see the project through?
If you start that project, but can’t finish it, everyone who walks past is going to be looking at those unfinished concrete foundations. ‘What are those?’ they’ll ask. ‘Oh, that idiot started building, then ran out of money!’
Or, suppose a country knows there’s a real danger of war against another country. Won’t the leader of the smaller country sit down with their generals and work out whether their hundred thousand troops can hold out against the two hundred thousand coming at them? If they can’t, won’t they try to negotiate, see if they can work out a peace deal?
It’s just the same being a disciple. If you’re not willing to risk everything you’ve got, don’t do it!
